Devcon: Ethereum's Flagship Conference, Rotating The World
After producing 65+ side events across the Bogotá and Bangkok editions of Devcon, with a permanent CH3 hub in Bangkok and a team preparing Mumbai for Devcon 8, here is everything we know about Ethereum's flagship conference: its history, attendance, supporter model, costs and how to activate around Devcon Week.
What Is Devcon? Ethereum's Flagship Conference in Numbers
Devcon is the Ethereum Foundation's biennial flagship, the conference for the people who actually build Ethereum. Born as a Berlin meetup in 2014 before the network even launched, it deliberately rotates continents each edition and alternates years with its sister format Devconnect, so the ecosystem gets one major anchor moment per year, in a new city every time. Culturally it is the anti-trade-show: no title sponsors, unbuyable speaking slots, tickets priced down to $20, and a badge population denser in developers and researchers than any other event in crypto. The commercial energy lives in Devcon Week, the citywide swarm of hacker houses, research salons, workshops and community gatherings that surrounds the venue.
Devcon History: Berlin To Mumbai (2014–2026)
nine editions · five continents · organised by the Ethereum Foundation
No conference in crypto has travelled further. Devcon has never repeated a city, and since the pandemic pause its growth has been geometric: attendance roughly doubled at Bogotá 2022, then doubled again at Bangkok 2024. Devcon 8 lands in Mumbai on 3–6 November 2026, the first edition in South Asia and, if the doubling cadence holds, potentially the largest developer conference Ethereum has ever staged.
| Edition | Year | City · Venue | Attendance | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Devcon 0 | 2014 | Berlin, Kreuzberg | ~Dozens | Founders' meetup, pre-launch |
| Devcon 1 | 2015 | London | ~400 | First public edition |
| Devcon 2 | 2016 | Shanghai | ~800 | First Asia edition |
| Devcon 3 | 2017 | Cancún | ~2,000 | Largest Ethereum gathering to date |
| Devcon 4 | 2018 | Prague Convention Center | ~3,000 | Peak-ecosystem Europe edition |
| Devcon 5 | 2019 | Osaka | ~3,000+ | Most content to date |
| Devcon 6 | 2022 | Bogotá, Ágora | ~6,000 | 444 speakers · post-Merge · 3-year gap |
| Devcon 7 (SEA) | 2024 | Bangkok, QSNCC | 12,500 | 135 countries · Nov 12–15 |
| Devcon 8 | 2026 | Mumbai | Upcoming | Nov 3–6 · first South Asia edition |
Sources: edition history, venues and attendance from the Ethereum Foundation's official Devcon archive (devcon.org past-events), Devcon 7 organiser communications (12,500 attendees / 135 countries; expected attendance "doubled since Bogotá") and press reporting on Devcon 6 (6,000 attendees, 444 speakers). Attendance figures are organiser-reported. Compiled July 2026.
Devcon vs Devconnect · One Anchor Moment Every Year
- Devcon is the single-venue flagship for the whole ecosystem; Devconnect, run in the alternating years, is a decentralised citywide week of independent, topic-specific events (Amsterdam 2022 → Istanbul 2023 → Buenos Aires 2025).
- Devconnect ARG was a step-change: billed as the first "Ethereum World's Fair", it drew 14,000 attendees from 130+ countries to La Rural with 80+ exhibiting teams across eight themed districts, and ~500 community-run gatherings across Buenos Aires.
- For brands the pattern matters more than the naming: every November there is exactly one Ethereum Foundation anchor week somewhere in the world, in a new city each time, a calendar you can plan an annual activation strategy around. CH3 produced 49 events across the last three Devconnect weeks alongside our Devcon work.
Devcon Attendance By Edition
2017–2026 · doubling every edition since 2018 · organiser-reported
Devcon Attendance Growth
How this data was compiled: attendance per edition is drawn from the Ethereum Foundation's Devcon archive and organiser announcements (Devcon 6: 6,000; Devcon 7: 12,500 from 135 countries, described by the organiser as double the Bogotá edition). Early editions (2014–2016, roughly dozens to ~800) are omitted from the chart for scale. All figures are organiser-reported; the Foundation is a non-profit and does not sell audited attendance data. Last verified: July 2026.
The pattern worth planning around: attendance has doubled every edition since Prague, and each doubling happens in a brand-new region, which means every Devcon combines pent-up global demand (a two-year gap) with a first-time local audience. Bangkok showed what that compounding looks like: 12,500 badges and a satellite calendar so dense that entire parallel conferences, ETHGlobal Bangkok, DuneCon, frENSday, Thailand Blockchain Week, ZuThailand's month-long pop-up city, anchored themselves to Devcon Week. Mumbai 2026 repeats the setup in one of the world's largest developer markets, a dynamic we track across the industry in our Crypto Event Report 2025.

Who Attends Devcon?
the most builder-dense audience in crypto · priced for access by design
Devcon runs the opposite ticket philosophy to commercial conferences: access is engineered in, not out. Bangkok pricing ran from a $599 general pass down to $299 builder, $99 academic, $49 local SEA builder and $20 youth tickets, so students, local developers and community organisers are a deliberate, structural share of the room, while VCs and BD teams are proportionally scarcer than anywhere else on the crypto calendar. That inversion is exactly why side-event guest lists matter so much during Devcon Week: the professional density a brand wants has to be assembled, not assumed.
The Audience, In Four Layers
- Developers, researchers & core contributors, the defining majority: protocol teams, client devs, cryptographers, academics; the deepest technical bench of any crypto event.
- Founders & startup teams, heavily product- and infrastructure-led; launches here target credibility with builders rather than headlines.
- Community organisers, students & local builders, subsidised in via discounted tiers; at Bangkok, the SEA builder and youth routes made the local layer unusually large.
- Investors, BD & media, present but the thinnest layer in crypto; funds that attend tend to be technical, and deal conversations migrate almost entirely into Devcon Week.
Attendee Split: Main Conference vs Side Events
Source: the Ethereum Foundation publishes no attendee-role breakdown; these are indicative CH3 estimates from the guest composition of our Devcon Week productions in Bogotá and Bangkok, the conference's programming structure, and its published ticket tiers ($599 general / $299 builder / $99 academic / $49 local builder / $20 youth at Devcon 7), an access architecture that structurally guarantees a large community layer. The side-event column reflects curated business and mixed formats from CH3 guest lists; pure technical formats (hackathons, research salons) skew even more heavily to builders. Last reviewed: July 2026.
Devcon Supporters & The Cost Of Presence
no title sponsors · unbuyable stage · brand presence lives in Devcon Week
Devcon is the one anchor conference where you largely cannot buy your way in. The Ethereum Foundation, a non-profit, runs a deliberately restrained Supporter Program in place of sponsorship tiers: several dozen supporters per edition, modest visibility, community-benefit framing, and a hard rule that stage content is curated, never sold. There is no prospectus with title packages to benchmark. The consequence is structural: at Devcon, virtually all brand competition happens in the side-event calendar, which makes Devcon Week the purest expression of the off-floor dynamic we quantified across six tier-1 conferences in our analysis of what crypto conference sponsorships actually cost, and where the ROI is.
What This Means For Brands
- Your Devcon budget is a side-event budget. With no floor packages to buy, the entire brand-presence spend shifts to hosting: hacker houses, workshops, dinners and community formats across Devcon Week.
- The economics favour it anyway: our prospectus research across commercial tier-1 conferences found hosted events delivering hours of engaged attention per guest, where expo-floor presence averages seconds, and at Devcon the expo option barely exists.
- Credibility is the currency. This audience reads sponsor logos as noise and technical generosity as signal, the brands that win Devcon Week teach something, fund something, or build something attendees can use. Ask the CH3 Bangkok or CH3 Mumbai team what that looks like in venue-and-format terms.

How this data was compiled: figures are median totals built from the contracted line items behind each format, venue hire, catering, AV, staffing and comparable categories, in CH3's internal contracting database, spanning deliveries from 2020 through 2026 (pulled July 2026). The Sample Size column reflects how many line items feed each row; interpret anything under 50 with caution.
Typical Devcon-Week Activation Budgets

| Executive dinner (25–75 pax) | ~€3,900 | Enquire | Enquire | 6 |
| Cocktail reception (75–200 pax) | Enquire | ~€5,300 | Enquire | 16 |

| Large summit (200–400 pax) | Enquire | Enquire | ~€35,500 | 78 |
How this data was compiled: host-city medians aggregate the contracted line items of events CH3 delivered in Bangkok, Bogotá and Buenos Aires between 2020 and 2026 (database pull: July 2026); Buenos Aires figures are dominated by Devconnect ARG 2025 deliveries. The Sample Size column counts line items per row across all three cities; treat rows below 20 as directional and request a live quote for current pricing. Certain medians cover venue and F&B line items only rather than a full production scope. Mumbai benchmarks will be published after Devcon 8, current Mumbai venue rate cards are available on request.
Reading The Host-City Numbers
- Devcon cities are the value end of the anchor circuit. A 100–200 person networking evening medians ~€7,500 in Bangkok and ~€5,900 in Bogotá, versus €15K–€46K for comparable formats in Singapore, Dubai or Cannes. The rotating-city model keeps landing Devcon in markets where production budgets stretch dramatically further.
- Buenos Aires ran roughly 2x Bangkok for like-for-like mid-size formats, Devconnect ARG demand met a tighter premium-venue market, a preview of what a hot host city does to pricing.
- Mumbai is the open question of 2026: deep venue inventory and favourable economics, but Devcon-week demand concentrated on a handful of international-standard spaces. Early booking will matter more than budget size.
How To Activate Around Devcon
the CH3 playbook · culture-first · built for a rotating conference
- Design for builders, not buyers.
- Developer adoption → hacker house, technical workshop, research salon, hackathon corner (20–150 pax)
- Ecosystem credibility → full-day brand house or co-hosted summit with technical programming (150–400 pax)
- Pipeline → small founder dinners and closed-door sessions, the investor layer is thin at the venue and concentrates at curated tables
- Community → co-working space, breakfast series, wind-down socials for the post-conference decompression
- Respect the culture or be ignored. This is the most marketing-resistant audience in crypto: token-shill formats and logo-wallpaper parties underperform badly, while events that teach, fund or ship something earn outsized word of mouth.
- Plan for a city that changes every edition. Devcon has never repeated a host city, a partner with permanent global operations beats rebuilding a local vendor stack from zero every two years. Our Bangkok team ran Devcon SEA from a home base; our Mumbai preparation for Devcon 8 started the day the city was announced.
- Book Mumbai early and around the constraint. The constraint isn't cost, it's the short list of international-standard venues that every Devcon Week host will chase for the same four November nights.
- Anchor to the community calendar. Luma listings, credible technical co-hosts and community aggregators fill Devcon Week rooms; paid promotion largely doesn't. The right ecosystem voices multiply reach, see our guide to choosing KOLs for your crypto event.
- Counter-program the parallel conferences. With ETHGlobal, satellite summits and pop-up cities absorbing evenings, breakfast slots, day-two lunches and the post-Devcon weekend are the underpriced windows for turnout quality.
- Decide what success is before you book. Developers onboarded, repos starred, integrations started, funds met, pick the metric first and instrument for it, using the approach in Measuring What Events Actually Do.
CH3 Track Record Around Devcon
- 65+ events produced across the Bogotá and Bangkok Devcon weeks, plus 49 more across the last three Devconnect editions, inside a global portfolio of 680+ productions.
- A permanent hub in a Devcon host city: CH3 Bangkok has delivered 68 events year-round, which is why our Devcon SEA clients got local venue relationships, not conference-week improvisation.
- Mumbai-ready for Devcon 8: venue scouting and supplier vetting for November 2026 is already underway through CH3 Mumbai.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many people attend Devcon?
Devcon 7 in Bangkok (November 2024) welcomed 12,500 attendees from 135 countries, roughly double Devcon 6 in Bogotá (6,000, with 444 speakers). Attendance has approximately doubled every edition since 2018, and figures are reported by the Ethereum Foundation, the non-profit organiser.
Where and when is Devcon 8?
Devcon 8 takes place 3–6 November 2026 in Mumbai, India, the conference's first edition in South Asia. Devcon rotates continents every edition and alternates years with Devconnect, whose 2025 Buenos Aires edition (the first "Ethereum World's Fair") drew 14,000 attendees to La Rural.
How much does it cost to sponsor Devcon?
Devcon has no conventional sponsorship tiers. The Ethereum Foundation runs a low-key Supporter Program, several dozen supporters per edition, no title branding, and speaking slots that cannot be bought. Community-facing brand presence is built instead through the Devcon Week side-event calendar, where hosting costs are set by the market: CH3's contracting database puts a 100–200 person networking evening in Bangkok at a median of roughly €7,500 excl. VAT.
What is the difference between Devcon and Devconnect?
Both are Ethereum Foundation events that alternate years. Devcon is the flagship single-venue conference for the global Ethereum community (Bangkok 2024, Mumbai 2026). Devconnect is a decentralised, citywide week of independent, topic-specific events (Amsterdam 2022, Istanbul 2023, Buenos Aires 2025, 14,000 attendees, 80+ exhibiting teams). For brands, the practical effect is one major Ethereum anchor moment every year, in a new city each time.
What is the best way for a brand to activate around Devcon?
Match the culture: Devcon's audience is the most builder-dense in crypto and famously allergic to sales-led formats. Content-first activations, technical workshops, hacker houses, research salons, co-working spaces, consistently out-perform pure parties on turnout quality. Rooms fill through credible co-hosts and Luma-listed community calendars rather than paid promotion, and because the conference lands in a new city every edition, working with a production partner that operates globally beats rebuilding a local vendor stack every two years.
